The City-Parish checklist, simplified
| Rule | What it means at your house |
|---|---|
| No openings within 5 ft | Windows, doors, dryer vents and drain openings (NFPA 37) |
| Exhaust direction | Never toward your house, a neighbor's house or HVAC equipment |
| 10 ft from air intakes | Exhaust end at least 10 ft from make-up air intakes; 10 ft from AC condensers unless the manual allows less |
| Gas regulator | Typically 5 ft from the regulator; follow the manual |
| Property lines | Manufacturer clearances apply at the line, fence or no fence |
| CO alarms | In each sleeping room and the living area for final inspection |
| Paperwork | Site plan with every distance, plus the full installation manual |

18 inches or 5 feet?
Both rules can apply at once. The 5 ft distance is to openings. Separately, some air-cooled models may sit as close as 18 in to the wall behind them, but only units tested and marked for it; others need more (Generac). Liquid-cooled units usually need more room.
Zero-lot-line and narrow side yards
The checklist says outright that zero-lot-line lots in East Baton Rouge usually don't have the clearance. A 2021 Baton Rouge homeowner with about 50 in between wall and property line ran into exactly this (Tiger Droppings); the usual answers are a front or back location, or asking for a variance, which a neighbor's objection can sink.
Fees and who pulls the permit
Residential generator permit: $500. Residential mechanical, electrical, plumbing or gas trade permits: $125 each (fee schedule). Residential jobs over $7,500 must be done by a registered or licensed contractor; a homeowner can pull a permit only with a notarized exemption affidavit (brla.gov). Your dealer normally files it. Central, Zachary, Baker, Ascension, Livingston and West Baton Rouge run their own permit offices.
Flood height
Find your base flood elevation on the City-Parish flood map service. The parish elevation certificate sets a lowest floor at that elevation plus 1 ft (form). We couldn't confirm whether a generator added to an existing home must meet the same height, so if you're in a mapped zone, ask for a raised stand and have the dealer confirm with the permit office.
Common questions
Do I need a permit for a standby generator in Baton Rouge?
Yes. The City-Parish lists generator installation as permit work, applied for online through MGO Connect (brla.gov). The residential generator permit is $500, and trade permits are $125 each (fee schedule). Carbon monoxide alarms must be in every bedroom and the living area before final inspection.
How close to the house can the generator sit?
No window, door, dryer vent or other opening may be within 5 ft of it (NFPA 37, written into the City-Parish checklist). Some units can sit 18 in from a wall, but only models tested and marked for it (Generac). The exhaust end must be 10 ft from air intakes and can't point at your house, a neighbor's house or the AC.
I have a zero-lot-line house. Can I still get one?
Maybe not on the narrow side. The City-Parish checklist warns that zero-lot-line lots usually lack the required clearance, and the manufacturer's distances apply at the property line even where there's no fence (generator checklist). Front or rear placement, or a variance, are the usual ways around it.
